A 2-days adventure tour to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Uganda offers an exciting opportunity to encounter rhinos in their natural habitat and explore the surrounding wilderness. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a private, non-profit, animal sanctuary in Uganda. Established in 2005 to re-introduce Southern White Rhinos in the wild, the sanctuary is the only place in the country, where one can observe these endangered creatures in wild.
Uganda used to have a big number of Rhinos in the ’90s but during the massive wars in the 1970s, there were serious killings, poaching and hunting and by 1983 there was the extinction of Rhinos. In 2005 the sanctuary was established and rhinos were re-introduced by the Rhino Fund Uganda. Ziwa is the only place where you can track rhinos on foot; it is really great and exciting as you watch the white rhinoceros! This place has tight 24-hour security after the actions are done in the ’90s. The sanctuary has around 78 amazing trained and skilled park rangers; it works for hand in hand with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and Ziwa Ranchers Limited. It started with 6 rhinos but currently, the number has grown to about 32 animals. Apart from rhinos, Ziwa is also home to a number of bird species, reptiles, and 40 mammal species including antelopes, crocodiles, hippos, and monkeys among others. There is surely a lot to do and see in the sanctuary such as birding and Nature walks Rhino tracking is the major activity. It is a refreshing walk through Savannah for a guided nature walk. The sights and sounds of the sanctuary, home of mammals, birds and reptiles are enriching.
The guide shares knowledge about flora and fauna on the 70 acres. The average time for a guided walk is 2 hours. Uganda has over 1,062 recorded bird species. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has over 300 bird species. The bird trails in the sanctuary cover the swamps, savannah and woodlands. Bird watching is ideal if tourists spend at least 2 nights at Amuka lodge. The bird guides are excellent in ticking off the bird list. The activity on a day requires 2 hours. While birding, tourists opt for the Shoebill Canoe Safari. During this safari tour, you spot the most sought-after bird in Uganda, the Shoebill stork. The shoebills are harboured in the swamp. The boat safari starts at 6 am and takes 3-4 hours. Water birds are plentiful and this activity is a must for anyone who loves nature or is interested in birding is a must.

Shoebill Trek And Canoe Ride
The shoebill stork is one of the sought-after prehistoric bird species. The shoebill stork is unique and found in places with water in most cases. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is one of the places to spot the shoebill. You are almost always guaranteed of seeing the shoebill here. On a lucky day, you could see up to 10 of them. To search and see the shoebill, the early morning shoebill trek, and canoe ride is best suitable for the sights of the sunrise. Tourists must spend the night within the park since the activity starts early before the entrance to the park is opened.
Bird Watching
Over 300 bird species can be seen in the sanctuary. There are four bird sighting trails within the sanctuary covering the woodlands, swamp, and savannah. Bird guides in the sanctuary are and can help spot the different bird species. You need about 2 hours to do the activity. Also carry closed shoes, water, long pants, and insect repellent.
Guided Night Walk
The guided night walk will introduce to you night sounds and sensations you did not know existed! This is an experience you cannot exclude from your activities in the sanctuary. There are many nocturnal animals and who knows what you might bump into.
Guided Nature Walk
Be at one with nature and its sounds and smells! One of the well-trained guides will take you on a walk through our lush bush. Who knows what you will see, the sanctuary is home to a wide variety of animals, birds, and reptiles. The guide will share his knowledge of not only the animals but botany and vegetation as well.

Day 1: Pick-Up And Transfer To Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
The sanctuary is home to over 350 bird species, so birders can have a full or half-day time of birding either on a guided nature walk or on the boat. You will be guided by experienced bird guides. Bird species that can be spotted include; the Blue-spotted dove, the Shoebill stork, Abdim’s stork, and African black crake to mention a few. guide at the top and transfer back to the lodge. Day 2: Rhino TraCking, Nature Walk And Transfer Back To Kampala City/Entebbe
This is an awesomely unique activity which grants you the chance to see rhinos on foot; this involves watching them up close and at a safer distance. With the guidance of skilled ranger guides, you can get closer to them by about 6 to 7m, you can take as many photos as you want and observe these endangered rhinos feed in their habitat. In fact, you can have a chance to see all the Big 5 of the safari. You can also come across animals like antelopes and hippos among others. While doing the walk you can spot animals like the oribis, reedbucks, Gray Duikers, bushbucks, Hartebeests, monkeys, butterflies and monitor lizards. Or you will be dropped off at your hotel/lodge or at any place of your inconvenience.
