Adventure Activities To Do In Jinja Town
White Water Rafting On River Nile
There are very few tour activities that can compare to the experience of white water rafting on the river nile the world’s longest river. The scenery is stunning, to say the least. The weather is conducive all year round and the water rapids look surreal. White water rafting on River Nile is best done in groups and an all-day rafting session covers a distance of about 21 kilometres through eight big rapids. In some parts, the water is calm, clear and perfect for swimming. Plenty of bird species can also be seen hovering around. Rafting on the Nile is a great highlight of Jinja tourist activities. Rafting is a highlight of most Jinja Tourist Activities.
Bungee Jumping
Jinja is well known for Bungee Jumping, an adrenaline-pumping experience where you plunge yourself 43 meters down into open space before partly immersing yourself into the Nile water at the Nile High Bungee. Bungee jumping is an activity much loved by those who want to test the limits of their adventurous spirits.
Source Of The Nile Tour
The River Nile has its source in Uganda. At this point the Nile water is seen setting off from the still Lake Victoria water at a reasonable speed before making its way up to the Mediterranean sea, making it the longest river in the world.
Boat Rides Along The Nile
A typical tour in Jinja is bound to include a boat ride along the River Nile. Boat Rides give visitors a chance to encounter lots of bird species and stunning scenery. Bird watching is best done while on one of these boat rides. Most Jinja Tourist Activities include boat rides along the River Nile.
Quad Biking
Quad biking is one of the popular Jinja Tourist Activities and takes adventure to a whole other level and does not require prior driving experience. A free training session is conducted before each safari and trips are tailored to suit the riders’ ability and give the best possible adventure. Sliding across the puddles and potholes in mud makes quad biking much more fun.
Kayaking
Kayaking on River Nile is a great way to experience the river up close. The weather is always right foe Kayakers to explore the Nile, the beautiful surroundings and exotic birds.
Horse Riding
Horse riding is done along the shores of the River Nile and it is a great way to explore Uganda’s beauty. The surrounding landscape and the local communities make horse riding such a fun and adventurous experience. Birdwatchers also stand a chance of encountering many of the different bird species along the shores of the River Nile.
Playing Golf
Jinja has two famous golf courses, there is the Jinja Source of the Nile Golf Course and the Big Game Mini Golf Course. The Nile Golf Course was established in 1912 by colonial administrators and is one of the top five golf courses in Uganda. It is a 9-hole course and is open to everyone who wishes to test their golfing skills. It also has other facilities like a swimming pool, a snooker table, a tennis court, a bar and a restaurant. The big game mini-golf course is a much smaller course and is designed for families with children. It has ten holes that are decorated with animal sculptures (lion, buffalo, elephant, rhino and leopard etc.) and takes less than an hour to complete.
Visiting The Monument Of Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most famous global leaders in living memory. He is admired for his simplicity and for working tirelessly to help liberate India and help it begin the journey to modernization. His work and presence were felt as far as Africa. Before his death, Gandhi wished to have his ashes poured on the great Nile after his death was fulfilled. Apart from pouring the ashes, a statue of Gandhi was constructed close to the source of the Nile to mark his death and legacy. After visiting the source of the Nile, tourists usually stop to take photos at the monument but also to learn about his life and work.
Visiting Mabira Forest
This is one of the largest remaining tropical rainforests in Uganda. Unfortunately, a large size of it has been destroyed as a result of human activities and urbanization. It is now smaller than its original size but still allows for a great adventure and exciting activities for those who love nature. Mabira is located in the Buikwe district – between Mukono and Jinja. The main activities carried out in Mabira forest are camping, bird watching and nature walks.
Bird Watching
Uganda is one of the best destinations for bird watching in the world. The country has over 1060 species of birds spread across the country. Jinja is one of the best places for bird-watching safaris, the birds can be spotted right out of your hotel, along the roads, in forests like Mabira or on the waters of Lake Victoria and the river Nile. All one has to do is get a binocular and go out with a local birding Guide to look for sunbirds, eagles, sparrows, common cuckoos, marabou storks and so much more. We highly recommend going to Mabira forest or taking a boat along the Nile river for the best birding experience. Mabira forest is only 15 kilometres away from Jinja town and has an amazing collection of birds that can rival any other location in Uganda.
Visiting The Ssezibwa Falls
The Sezibwa falls are found in Kayunga district – off the Jinja to Kampala highly. They are one of those places that make Uganda a true pearl of Africa. Apart from the amazing scenery and opportunities to take amazing photos, the Ssezibwa falls offer tourists a great opportunity to go for an amazing cultural experience. According to the local legend, a woman got pregnant and produced water instead of babies. The water flowed in two directions and one was the river Ssezibwa. The Buganda kingdom views the river and waterfalls as sacred and many of their past kings would visit the falls for blessings/sacrifices. To this day, one of the most powerful shrines is found in the area and thousands of Ugandans continue to visit the shrine to seek blessings from the local gods. Brave tourists can pay a visit to the shrine and learn about the history of the place from the witch doctors.
Tubing The Nile
This is a newly introduced activity along the Nile. It involves floating on the waters of the river Nile on air-pressured tubes. As participants float on the Nile, you can have opportunities to go up to the main Jinja bridge and experience the amazing landscape. They can also watch monkeys, birds, tides and rapids from a distance. Tubing the Nile is a very cool thing to engage in and there are safety measures in place to ensure that no harm comes your way.
