Day 1: Arrive-Pick-Up and Transfer at Akagera National Park
You will be picked upon your arrival at the airport or at the hotel in Kigali. After breakfast, our driver/guide will pick you up at your hotel/residence in Kigali. And meet your birding guide who will transfer you to Akagera National Park for your safari experience and birding tour upon your arrival at the park, you will check in to your booked lodge and later in the evening you will meet with your driver/guide and head out to look for over 500 bird species including the papyrus gonolek and several other water birds. The park has 44 species of raptor and the palearctic migrants like the Gallinago media, Falco naumanni and the Glareola nordmanni. On this day, you will also encounter several animals like- elephants, buffaloes, leopards, hyenas, giraffe, zebras, lions, bushbucks, Topis, Oribis, water-buck, klipspringer, impala and Cape eland. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge in the park.
Day 2: Full Day Birdwatching Experience In Akagera National Park
After early breakfast In the morning, you will head out to Akagera National Park for an exciting full day birding experience to look out for birds like Amur falcon, Beaudouin’s snake eagle, Red-winged francolin, Blue-shouldered robin-chat, Booted eagle, Brown-chested lapwing, Cabanis’s bunting, Carruthers’s cisticola, Crested barbet, Denham’s bustard, Short-tailed pipit, Dimorphic egret, Eleonora’s falcon, Grasshopper buzzard, Northern brown-throated weaver, Souza’s shrike, Papyrus gonolek among others. In the afternoon you will head back at your booked lodge for a lunch break, after your driver/guide will take you for your boat cruise safari on Lake Ihema to look for several water birds and aquatics like Crocodiles and Hippos. Later in the evening after you retire, you shall be transferred back to the lodge for dinner, relaxation and overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
On your third day of Rwanda Birdwatching and Wildlife Safari Tour Experience, you will wake up early in the morning grab your breakfast and embark on a long drive from Akagera National Park to Nyungwe Forest National Park via Kigali. During this journey, you will drive through traditional home steeds and the rolling countryside landscapes. Arrival in the evening check in at the lodge in the park, dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 4: Full Day Birding Experience in Nyungwe Forest National Park
Wake up early for breakfast and drive to one of the important birdwatching areas in Rwanda for search of over 310 bird species of which 27 of these are restricted in range to Albertine rift. Birds in Nyungwe Forest National Park include; Rwenzori Turacos, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Shelley’s Crimson wing, Regal Sunbird, Cinnyris regius, Archer’s Robin-chat, Red-throated Alethe, Purple-breasted and Blue-headed, Kungwe Apalis, Rwenzori Apalis, Alehe poliophrys, Batis diops, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Rwenzori Batis, Black-and-white-casqued Hornbill, Stripe-breasted Tit Parus fasciiventer, Caprimulgus rwenzori, Melaenornis ardesiacus, Cossypha archeri, Dusky Crimson Wing, Francolinus nobilis, Cryptospiza jacksoni, Cryptospiza shelleyi, Hemitesia neumanni, Handsome Francolin, Kupeornis rufocinctus, Rwenzori Nightjar, Red-collared Babbler, Neumann’s Warbler among others. Later return to the lodge for dinner, relaxation and overnight stay.
Day 5: Birding in Nyungwe Forest National Park and Chimpanzee trekking
After breakfast, you will return to Nyungwe Forest for another birdwatching safari experience in search for some of birds that you might have missed in the previous day, later in the afternoon your driver/guide will drive you back at the lodge for a lunch break, thereafter you will head out have briefing about how to behave while with the chimpanzees. Thereafter, you will start your tracking, this activity is led by a park ranger/guide for the chimpanzees in their colonies. Also see the habituated Golden Monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, blue monkeys, Angolan colobus, L’hoest’s monkeys, and owl-faced monkeys. In the afternoon, you can choose to relax at your lodge, or take a forest walk to the waterfalls, canopy walk or colobus monkey tracking, dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 6: Transfer to Ruhengeri Area
Have early breakfast and get transferred to Musaze in the north-west of Rwanda with several stopovers to sight birds. This journey will take you through the Congo Nile trail and explorer Lake Kivu. You will be able to see birds on lake Kivu such as Southern Red Bishop, Common Waxbill, Red-chested sunbirds, Hadada Ibis, Crimson-rumped Waxbill, Scarlet-chested, Spectacled Weaver, Striated Heron, Variable Sunbird, Black-headed Weaver, Black-headed Heron, Sacred Ibis, Red-billed Firefinch, Yellow-fronted Canary, Holub’s Golden Weaver, Little bee-eater, Bronzed Manakin, Yellow-bellied Waxbill and among many others. Later return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Morning Birdwatching Safari in Rugezi Swamp and Transfer Back to Kigali City
After breakfast, you will head out to Rugezi swamp which is another important birdwacting area (IBA) in Rwanda for another birding tour experience. Look out for the following bird species in Rugezi swamp; papyrus gonolek, papyrus canary, papyrus yellow warbler, carruuthers’s cisticola, Grauer’s swamp-warbler, white-collared oliveback, slender-billed starling, yellow-browed citril, thick-billed seedeater, baglafecht weaver, white-winged scrub-warbler among others. Later after a lunch break you will take a short canoe ride on the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera to look for several water bird species such as Pied and Malachite Kingfishers, Hammerkops, Darters, storks, Grey crowned cranes, African fish eagles, Herons and Cormorants among others. Later transfer to Kigali to your hotel, lodge or you will be dropped off at any place of your inconvenience.
