The Rwenzori Mountain range rises up to 5109m and its centre point features the 3rd highest peak “Margherita.” The Rwenzori Mountain which is also popularly referred to as Mountains of the Moon lies on the rift valley floor but what makes it unique is that isn’t a volcanic mountain.

The Rwenzori Mountain/Mountains of the Moon is also one of the very few black mountains on the planet with permanent snow and glaciers one reason most climbers prefer trekking to its summits compared to even Kilimanjaro Mountain. The Rwenzori Mountains cover an area of 4800kms, length of 120kms and width of up to 65kms. Its highest point “Margherita” sits on Mount Stanley at 5109m. Reaching an elevation of 5,109m, Rwenzori Mountain is one of Africa’s tallest mountain ranges, exceeded in altitude only by the free-standing Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro. The Rwenzori range has 6 major peaks, Mt Stanley (5,109m), Mt Speke (4,890m) Mt Baker (4,843m), Mt Emin (4,798m), Mt Gessi (4,715m) and Mt Luigi di Savoia (4,627m). The highest peak in the Mt Stanley complex is called Margherita peak (5,109) and it is this peak which makes the Rwenzori Mountains the 3rd highest range in Africa. Unlike the two highest mountains in Africa (Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya), the Rwenzori Mountains are not volcanic but predominantly old quartzite and gneiss. Despite its existence almost at the Equator, the mountain has distinctive glacial peaks visible miles away as one travels in the Western part of Uganda. Its slopes which are above 1,600m are the preserve of hikers, who rate the Rwenzoris to be the most challenging of all African mountains.

There are five different Vegetation Zones found in the Rwenzori Mountains. These are grassland (1000-2000m), montane forest (2000-3000m), bamboo/ mimulopsis zone (2500-3500m), Heather/ Rapanea zone (3000-4000m) and the afro-alpine moorland zone (4000-4500m).The park has also got a wide variety of large mammals which inhabits the lower slopes. Formation Of The Rwenzori Mountains

The Rwenzori Mountain ranges formed due to a shift in the Earth’s crust about 3 million years back. The shift resulted in an uplift of the rock comprising quartzite, gneiss and granite. The shift in the tectonic plate is believed to have pushed the mountain block upwards and tilted it to make high peaks. Erosion and deposition of sediment over years resulted in the moulding of the range which today is referred to as the Rwenzori Mountain ranges. The Rwenzori Mountain range has a composition of 6 massifs each of them separated by deep gorges. While on the Rwenzori Mountaineering experience, the 6 peaks/mountain massifs to trek through include Mount Baker/Kiyanja, the 3rd highest of the 6 Rwenzori Mountain massifs. Mt. Baker sits at an altitude of 4843m and features multiple subsidiary peaks like Edward peak. Mt. Baker’s ridge was first hiked by Rubert Grauer in 1906.

Mountain Stanley

Mountain Stanley is 5109m high, making it the highest of all the 6 Rwenzori Massifs with Margherita its highest summit. The Margherita peak features 11 subsidiary peaks and boasts of incredibly spectacular glaciers which include the Stanley plateau. Mt Stanley is what marks the Uganda and D.R. Congo boundary.

Mount Speke, is Rwenzori Mountain’s 2nd highest peak sitting at an altitude of 4890m. It has 4 summits including Johnston at 4834m, Ensonga at 4865m, Vittorio Emanuele at 4890 and at 4572m, there is Trident summit. Mt. Baker, Speke and Mt. Luigi di Savoia Mountain takes its name from the Duke of Abruzzi who climbed most of the 6 Rwenzori Mountains peaks.

The Rwenzori Mountains make up part of the Albertine rift which is the western rift valley arm of the East Africa rift. It boasts of high peaks, and beautiful gorges carved by glaciers making its topography unique. Mountain Rwenzori is the only African mountain range that represents glacial equatorial basement rock which formed due to the earth’s uplift. The first and the highest waterfall is about 100 meters which are located deep in the Sipi villages you will drive from the main road and enter the local community to explore the waterfall’s, Parking space is available, and the locals will demand a little fee of 2 dollars to protect your car during the time you’re at the Sipi fall. When you visit the Sipi falls there is one unique thing noticed during my adventure into the sipi villages is that you won’t see the water again after the view of the falls as water runs under the bedrocks till it makes the river sipi. The surrounding area is full of lush, green hills which are great for hiking and bird watching. The town of Sipi is located within walking distance of the falls.

It is a small, one-street town with several restaurants, hotels, and campsites. The falls are located up in the hills where the weather is nice and cool. The whole surrounding area is absolutely beautiful and definitely worth a visit if you are travelling in Uganda. The climate in this area is cool since it’s a hilly area and sometimes as individuals are hiking there are rains, which makes hiking a bit hard, but it is also an experience of its own, generally, it is a place available for chilling, loosening up and relaxing from the congestion around cities. The nearby communities have hospitable people and majorly the Sabiny and Bagishu live around this area and do farming such as growing Arabica coffee, which is the major cash crop in this land, this coffee is grown at altitudes between 1600metres and 1900metres above sea level. While their individuals can engage in visiting these plantations, these visits can be organised by local guides in the area.

Activities To Do at Sipi Fall

Hiking

Since all the waterfalls are located in different areas of Mt. Elgon, it is impossible to see them at the same time, but they can be seen in one day. The paths to these falls are approximately 7km to 8km as you walk and it takes around 3 hours to visit all the falls, but it is dependent on individual fitness and pace. As you hike you will need walking sticks to give you support since you go through some steep spots and in case it rains the paths get slippery and muddy. There are different starting points for the hike depending on which waterfall to visit first. Though if you have lesser time you are advised to start with the main waterfall and continue with others later. But in cases where you have enough time it’s better to first hike to the first and second waterfall, take a break may have lunch or relax as you continue to the last waterfall. Cars cannot reach all these spots because the terrain is steep, this is why you go for a hike, it is an amazing experience, and you will be having local guides who are informed about the historical and geographical background of the area.

Abseiling And Rock Climbing

This activity is done at the main waterfall and is most enjoyed by adventurous travelers. The equipment also known as rappels to be used is availed and also there are skilled guides to guide you through this exciting adventure in the Coffee plantation visit the coffee plantations on the lower slopes of Mt. Elgon while at sipi add to your experience by visiting these plantations. The coffee is majorly Arabica coffee and grows within altitudes 1600m and 1900m, it is the cash crop to the Bagishu and Sabiny in this area, during this visit you will learn also how coffee is harvested, processed, roasted and other things, you will also be able to see how people live in these communities. Cultural encounters. Being in Kapchorwa there is a lot to see like the Sabiny who basically stays around sipi. Their way of life, dress code, and traditional dances can be organized by the community. Also, this place is known for female and male circumcision, though that of females has reduced over the years since it was found to be unhealthy and risky to women, that of men is an amazing activity to witness especially if you visit this area during the time circumcisions are done.

Bird Watching

If you are a birder, you cannot miss out on visiting sipi while on a safari in Uganda, in fact, mountain Elgon national park has around 275 bird species so you will see most of them while in this area, you can also see some birds while seated in the gardens of Sipi River lodge if that is the accommodation you have opted for.

Mountain Biking

You can opt to travel with your bike if you are to take part in this activity it is so adventurous and thrilling to ride your bike in the Rocky Mountains, something to remember always.

Visit The Sipi River

Apart from visiting the 3 waterfalls you could also take the time and visit the Sipi River, it has nice vegetation including the ‘sep plant’ which is where the name sipi was derived. This plant is said to be a medicine for measles and fevers. Enjoy a walk along this river with its beautiful scenery.
