3 DAYS: MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK UGANDA SAFARI

A 3-days safari to Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda offers a fantastic opportunity to explore diverse wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and the iconic Murchison Falls. Murchison Falls National Park is the largest conservation area in Uganda covering an area of over 3,840km deriving its name from its famous waterfall; the Murchison falls. These falls are formed when the Victoria Nile powerfully forces its way through a narrow cleft as it thrusts 43m down with a thundering cascade. The Park is home to a variety of wildlife including 76 mammal species and 451 bird species. Four of the big five can be found here and primates include patas monkeys and about 800 chimpanzees which live within Budongo forests and Kaniyo Pabidi. Also in the park, adjacent to the Masindi – Gulu Highway, are the Karuma Falls, the location of the 600 megawatts Karuma Power Station, which will be Uganda’s largest power station when it comes online circa 2018. The Murchison Falls Conservation Area and the adjacent Bugondo Forest Reserve have 76 species of mammals as well as Uganda’s largest population of Nile crocodiles. Roughly 450 bird species are present, including a variety of waterfowl such as the rare shoe-billed stork, Budongo’s 59 “restricted range” species, dwarf kingfisher, Goliath heron, white–thighed hornbill, and great blue turaco. Since 2005, the protected area is considered a Lion Conservation Unit.

Bird Watching

Lake Mutanda is one of the top birding destinations in Uganda and a great number of bird species and good birding opportunities are some of the things to do and see at Lake Mutanda. Volcano Hike in Mgahinga National Park

For those interested in Hiking, Lake Mutanda is close to the Gahinga Ranges namely Mountain Sabyinyo, Mountain Gahinga and Mountain Muhabura and you can make a choice of climbing one of the mountains depending on your fitness. Mountain Sabinyo is at 3,669m and takes about eight hours to cover the round trip, following a steep ridge up to the peak, Mountain Gahinga which is the smallest with 3474m takes around six hours to ascend and descend, topped by a swamp-filled crater and giant lobelia. Mountain Muhavura is the highest peak at 4,127m, and this 12km round trip takes around eight hours. Once at the top, hikers are rewarded on a clear day with views of the Virunga Volcanoes, Lake Edward, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the peaks of the Rwenzori Mountain. 3 DAYS: KIBALE FOREST NATIONAL PARK UGANDA SAFARI

A 3-days safari in Kibale Forest National Park in Uganda offers a fantastic opportunity to explore lush rainforests, encounter primates, and immerse yourself in nature. Kibale Forest is renowned for its chimpanzee tracking experiences. Kibale National Park is located in the western part of Uganda, which protects the moist evergreen rainforest. It is 766 square kilometers in size and ranges between 1,100 meters and 1,600 meters in elevation. Despite encompassing primarily moist evergreen forest, it contains a diverse array of landscapes. However, the most popular activity is the Kanyanchu Primate Walk. Thirteen species can be seen, and a good variety of diurnal monkeys invariably encountered, but the stars of this twice-daily show are chimpanzees. Kanyanchu’s chimpanzees have been tracked since 1993 and the chances of locating them are excellent. Crater Lakes Safari In Kibale Conservation Area

Kibale National Park’s craters are located on the rift valley floor of the Great Western Rift Valley region. Tourists know the craters as the Ndali Kasandra crater region of Kibale National Park. The Batoro (the tribe located in this area) have a strong belief attached to these caves with an interesting myth told through the generations about them.

A 3-days safari to explore Ssese Islands in Uganda offers a tranquil escape to these beautiful islands located on Lake Victoria. Ssese Islands are a group archipelago of 84 small islands that lie in the northwestern part of Lake Victoria, the Islands are part of the Kalangala district which lies in the southern central part of the country. The largest island in the archipelago is called Bugala Island and is where Kalangala town is located. Bugala is the most developed and populated and is home to the Kalangala district administrative offices. The other islands like Ngamba, Serinya, Bugaba, Bubeke, Bukasa and Bufumira have fewer settlers or have been bought as private property. Ngamba is also one of the famous islands that make up the Ssese archipelago. Half of it is covered by forest and has been turned into a chimpanzee sanctuary. Ngamba is also home to red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, geckos, lizards, snakes and birds. It receives hippos and crocodiles occasionally.

The key attraction is the Ngamba Chimpanzee Sanctuary. The sanctuary rehabilitates orphaned or rescued chimps and provides them with a new home of plenty. Other than Bugala and Ngamba, there is also Banda Island and Bulago Island. Bird Watching

Is it one of the best places for bird watching in Uganda? The Ssese Islands are naturally suited to host birds because of the rainforest, water, fish and secluded swamps. Almost all types of birds can be found on the islands. There are also migratory and resident species that are unique to the islands. Those interested in bird watching should not forget to carry good binoculars when visiting the islands. Birders have a chance of spotting the African green broadbill, egrets, sparrows, marabou stocks, crested cranes, shoebill storks, the great blue turaco and much more.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary Chimpanzees

Is one of the most interesting and enthralling animals to watch in the wild. They have very unique social behaviors that leave visitors awestruck and engaged. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is one of the best places to see chimps in Uganda. The chimpanzees at Ngamba Islands are all orphans rescued from poachers, pet traders or after losing their parents. Once brought to the Centre, the orphaned chimpanzees are given a new home and given proper care. The Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Project was started in 1998 by Jane Goodall Institute and the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Visitors pay a certain amount to be a caretaker for a day, volunteer or watch the chimp’s feed.

Sport Fishing Lake

Victoria is home to over 270 species of fish. These fish species are some of the most delicious in world. It is believed that before the introduction of the Nile Perch, the lake had over 1,000 species. Sport fishing is very popular, and the huge Nile Perch is often the target. The great thing about fishing in Lake Victoria and its islands is that one is allowed to eat the fish. The fish can be fried to be taken with chips and a cold beer.

Game Viewing

Ssese Islands are covered with tropical rainforests and swamps. These forests and swamps are ideal habitats for different wildlife species including small primates, antelopes, sitatunga, hippos and crocodiles. The main primates found on the islands are the red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys and colobus monkeys. Sitatungas are mostly found in swampy areas. Boat Rides, Canoeing and Horse Riding Ssese Islands are surrounded by fresh waters that are excellent for boat riding, canoeing and horseback riding. Cycling And Beach Games

Bikes are excellent for touring new places. Most of the hotels in Bugala Island rent out bikes to guests at a cost. If you are a resident of Kampala, you can move on your own to avoid getting one you don’t like. Ssese Islands are one of the few places where people still believe in ancient traditional religions. If you are interested in knowing how the people of the Buganda kingdom communicated with their gods, then visiting the Kihumiro cave is highly recommended. This famous cave is where some of the local folks go to seek out help, prosperity and protection from their gods. The cave is a very mystical and strange place to find yourself in. You will find people smoking pipes and speaking in weird sounds as they call out spirits/gods. The shrine is considered sacred, and everyone is required to remain silent and remove their shoes.

Nanziri Waterfalls

These scintillating waterfalls were named Nanziri in honor of the god of the waterfall. They are nestled between Nanziri cave and Wanema’s shrine. It is also a sacred place for many of the local people who worship from the waterfall. The remains of sacrifices to the gods can be seen all over the place including pieces of meat, cowrie shells, bark cloths and coffee beans. The waterfall god is normally sought by fishermen for blessings, wealth and protection before going out fishing. If successful in their fishing expedition, they come back to the shrine to thank the gods. The waterfalls are also s source of medicine to cure common ailments.

4 DAYS: MGAHINGA GORILLA NATIONAL PARK UGANDA SAFARI

A 4-days safari to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda offers an opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes, unique wildlife, and the chance to trek the rare mountain gorillas. Mgahinga National Park is located in the southwestern corner of Uganda. The Park covers the northern slopes of the three northernmost Virunga Volcanoes: Mt. Muhavura (4,127 m), Mt. Gahinga (3,474 m), and Mt. Sabinyo (3,645 m). The Park is about 10 km south of Kisoro and is bordered to the south by the Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda and to the west by the Virunga National Park of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation area that spreads over the three countries. Each of these countries protects its own portion of the Virungas, in the Parc National des Volcans and Parc National des Virunga respectively. The three parks together form the 434-sq. km. ‘Virunga Conservation Area’ or VCA. Mgahinga is 33.7sq km, just 8% of the VCA. The entire Park is in Bufumbira County of Kisoro District. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is 33.7 sq. km and consists of the partly forested slopes of three extinct volcanoes. From far away, the huge cones of the Virunga volcanoes dominate the landscape and beckon you as you approach. When you reach the park you can get a great overview of the area by walking up the viewpoint, just 15 minutes from Ntebeko Gate. Mgahinga Park has great biological importance because, throughout the climatic changes of the Pleistocene ice ages, mountains such as these provided a refuge for mountain plants and animals, which moved up or down the slopes as the climate became warmer or cooler. The Virungas are home to a large variety of wildlife, including about half the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas. The lowest zone is an area of grass and bush which was formerly encroached and cleared by farmers and is now regenerating. Undisturbed vegetation starts with montane woodland, followed by the bamboo zone, montane forest and the Ericaceous zone which contains giant tree heathers. The sequence culminates with the spectacular alpine zone which occurs only on East African mountains above 3000m and includes bizarre giant forms of lobelia and groundsel. The park contains at least 39 species of mammal and 79 birds. Larger mammals include elephant, leopard, buffalo and bush pigs but these are rarely seen. Mgahinga’s most famous resident is the mountain gorilla. Less famous but equally rare and deserving of protection is the golden monkey which is found only in the Virungas and in one other forest in Rwanda. Notable bird species include the Rwenzori turaco, crowned hornbill, black kite and crowned crane.

Mountain Sabyinyo

Mountain Sabinyo has three peaks, this mountain is an extinct volcano in Eastern Africa. Sabinyo is found in three countries; Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain is located northeast of Lake Kivu in Rwanda and west of Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda. Sabinyo is found in three countries; Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The slopes of Mt. Sabyinyo are a habitat for the endangered Mountain Gorillas.

Mountain Gahinga

Mountain Gahinga lies between Sabinyo and Muhavura and rises up to 3,474 meters. Mount Gahinga has a swampy caldera on its peak believed to be as wide as180 meters. The vegetation across the mountain can be described as afro-montane with bamboo composing the main vegetation. Like Muhabura and Sabyinyo, the bamboo forests on Mount Gahinga are a habitat of the endangered mountain gorillas that live within the park. There are several other species of animals and birds that form part of the Mount Gahinga ecosystem. The golden monkeys are notable to these.

Mountain Muhavura

Mountain Muhavura is also known as Muhabura. This is one of the eight volcanoes known as the Virunga Ranges. It is an extinct volcano and lies on the border between Rwanda and Uganda. Rising to 4,127 meters as, Muhabura is the third highest of the eight major mountains of the Virunga ranges. It lies within part of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. Muhabura lies in both Uganda and Rwanda. It lies partly in Volcanoes National Park (PNV) of Rwanda and in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. This classic volcanic cone is capped by a small lake. Seeing this lake is a modest reward for a 5-hour trek that rises from 1700m to over 4100m. Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla Trekking is the most popular activity that is done in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Most travelers to Mgahinga visit the park for mountain gorilla trekking. There is one habituated gorilla family i.e Nyakagezi Gorilla Family. Garama Cave Exploration

The 342m long Garama Cave lies beneath a plateau northern edge of the park, 3km from Ntebeko. It is set in the former farmland zone but in earlier times, the cave forest when was occupied periodically by Batwa who used it as a council chamber and a retreat.

Border Trail Hike – No Visa Required

This hike takes you first toward Sabinyo. The trail climbs up the base of Sabinyo for a while through fine montane forest before turning toward the Congo. Along the way, you will get a great view of Sabinyo’s gorge and peaks. Upon reaching the Congo you cut back along the international border. The return leg to the Park Head Quarters is a great section for birding. The two rest huts along the way are good places for a break. Look closely for the golden monkeys and signs of elephants. Hiking time is 5 hours and distance 10 km.

Volcano Hiking/Mountain Climbing

This is a fabulous experience done in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park that your eyes will not go missing such as the three volcanoes that form part of the Virunga Ranges in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo as well as Uganda. Their names include Sabinyo which means Old man’s teeth, Gahinga means Pile of stones and Muhavura which means a guide. Mount Muhavura is the highest among the three Volcanoes with the advantage of viewing other Virunga Mountains from its peak. It can also be viewed from as far as Kisoro town. However, Mount Sabinyo is a gateway to Rwanda and DR Congo while in Uganda, while at the peak you’re geographically standing in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo at the same time. And the way that heads to the summit of Sabinyo is filled with mushy vegetation whose uncomfortable impact can be voided by dressing code in waterproof hiking boots. One to be able to climb up Mount Gahinga requires a hike through a bamboo forest. All three of these mountains can be climbed up to their summits in a day as long as you are in good health.
